Ballard Spahr, a multi-practice, national law firm, is seeking a media relations/communication specialist to be a core member of Ballard Spahr’s PR team, responsible for the execution of public relations activities that support the firm’s strategy and business goals. The selected individual will play a central role in a variety of activities, including engaging with media to secure opportunities for lawyers to demonstrate their thought leadership; drafting and proofreading communications materials; media monitoring and tracking; and educating lawyers and staff on PR best practices. The Media Relations Specialist must be an exceptional writer with exacting standards, deep knowledge of media across platforms, and strong interpersonal and project management skills. This position reports to the Communications Manager and can be located in any of our Eastern U.S. offices.
As the media relations/communication specialist, you will:
Translate our lawyers’ capabilities and firm developments into news releases, media pitches, and messaging that are error-free, effective, and appropriate for the intended audience;
Research, identify, and secure opportunities for attorneys to draft bylined articles;
Proactively monitor market developments to identify original story/pitch ideas that showcase firm and practice group capabilities;
Evaluate media opportunities for potential conflicts and secures approval for lawyers to participate in media activity; and
Educate lawyers and staff on PR best practices, including the organization and execution of training sessions.
The media relations/communication specialist also will work with the Communications Manager and office or practice group leaders to develop and executive PR/Brand Awareness strategies that align with business development goals; monitor, track, and report media coverage; draft and proofread communications materials, including announcements, awards submissions, website copy, and collateral materials; and assist in creating social media posts, as needed.
The selected candidate must be detail-oriented, able to successfully manage multiple projects and daily deadlines, and have outstanding time management and organizational skills. Analytical and problem-solving are essential. This position requires a flexible team player with exceptional client service skills, an intellectually curious and friendly demeanor, a “can do” attitude and a strong work ethic. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion and sensitivity are a must. The person in this position must be professional, courteous, and possess the flexibility to work effectively with a wide range of personalities.
Bachelor’s degree and three to five years’ of work experience. Previous experience in print journalism, law firm or PR agency strongly preferred. Demonstrated writing ability and a superior command of grammar, spelling, and usage. Working knowledge of Chicago Manual and AP style and a significant amount of understanding of media, across platforms.
